New Elk Mine is a steelmaking coal mine near Trinidad in Las Animas County, Colorado. A wholly-owned subsidiary of Allegiance Coal, we’re committed to the responsible mining of coal required for steel production.

New Elk Mine is located 24 miles (38 km) west of Trinidad, in Colorado, USA. The mine is scheduled to start operations in Spring 2021 and will initially produce approximately 1.6 million tonnes of coal each year, with plans to increase to 2.5 million tonnes in 2023.

The mine sits within the Raton Basin, which has been actively mined for nearly 150 years. New Elk Mine itself dates back to 1951, when it first began operations under the name of Allen Mine.
